Anna Foundation On Kanonkop

26 Jun

In our newsletter sent out in March, we shared some information about the afterschool project we started in collaboration with the Anna Foundation on Kanonkop at the beginning of 2018. We have had numerous positive comments and questions about this programme, so we thought it well to share a bit more on what happens on a daily basis at the afterschool centre.

At the head of the programme on Kanonkop we have Clifton Stuurman, Anna Foundation’s most experienced facilitator and student mentor. He has been with the Anna Foundation since 2017 and is currently busy with post-graduate studies in Educational Psychology. Clifton has a passion and love for children and their education and well-being is inspiring.

At the moment Clifton is assisted by Leticia Breda; together they are responsible for 13 children. According to Clifton, the typical day at the afterschool project starts off with lunch, which is sponsored by Kanonkop and the non-profit organization ‘The Lunchbox fund’ (http://thelunchboxfund.org/). They will then take a short break, do some breathing exercises for brain stimulation, after which we start with homework and assignments. We also use the Anna Foundation’s academic curriculum; which includes life skills and drama activities. Sport activities are on the agenda shortly afterwards, which is great for the release of some extra energy!

For Clifton, it is important to build a good relationship with each child, and he strives to create a safe space for the children where they feel at ease and are able to grow emotionally and intellectually.

‘Ons leerders werk baie goed saam en ek is baie opgewonde oor die toekoms van hierdie kinders. Elkeen van hulle is so spesiaal en uniek en ek glo in hulle toekoms. Onderwys is vir my baie belangrik en dit is my passie. Ek glo elkeen van ons het die reg om ‘n geleentheid te kry om ons drome te laat verwesenlik.’

Kanonkop and its community are lucky to have such a dedicated mentor for the children on the Estate. We are excited and eager to see how this will impact the lives of the children and families on the farm!
