Kanonkop Visits The Usa

26 Jun

Cape Classics has been a specialist South African wine importer in the US for over 20 years, and Kanonkop partnered with them around the same time. Each year, they put together a whirlwind trip for us to visit the market, work with their sales teams and share our wines and stories with wine lovers and industry gate keepers. This year I joined in on the group tour to represent our wines in Boston, New York and Southern California.

The US is one of the biggest wine markets in the world, however South African wines has traditionally been quite a tough sell. SA imports have been flat around 900 000 9 litre cases per year for the last few years, with a third of all SA imports being imported by Cape Classics. Although Kanonkop remains a niche player, we have been proud to see the interest in our wines grow along with a lot of interest in the South African category, and it’s fantastic to be able to visit with our enthusiastic customers who have been long-term lovers and supporters of the brand.

Our Kadette Cape blend and Kanonkop Pinotage are widely listed, and in more select outlets you can also find the Kadette Pinotage Rose, Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon, Paul Sauer and the Black Label Pinotage in only a handful of stores.

Some of the highlights of our visit included hosting a braai at Zachy’s, a fine wine destination store in Scarsdale, NY. A fun afternoon was had by all that joined to taste the great selection of SA wines, with some good meat and braai broodjies.

And a tasting at Union Square Wines in New York, one of New York’s wine institutions

For our fans that have visited our cellar door, you will know that we offer a cellar door sales fulfilment option through Southern Hemisphere wines, from Laguna Beach California. They ship country wide (to all states that it’s legal to do so).
